Who might you meet on a social nordic walk?

General

A lot of the appeal of nordic walking is in the opportunity to chat as you walk. This helps make it fun to exercise and motivates us all to get up and go out.

Nordic walking is very adaptable.  A strong and fit person may nordic walk alongside someone who would prefer a gentler pace.

If you want to use the walk as a workout, you can work your poles more intensively, whilst still walking at the same pace as the other person who may just use the poles for stability or comfort.

Alternatively, someone who often finds it a struggle to keep up with their partner out on a walk, may use their poles to give them extra momentum. ^ top

If you would like to join an organised social guided nordic walk, I lead guided nordic walks in scenic locations, such as Exmoor or a National Trust property, and we will often round these off with an optional visit to a tea garden or pub, to make it a fun social time. The walks often last between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours so we can all fit them into our week, some are longer.

Please note that for safety reasons, these walks are not suited to pure beginners in nordic walking.  If we have not met before, I will want to check that you know how to nordic walk safely at the basic level, before you may join a particular social walk. Nor do I accept non-nordic walkers on my guided walks.

I publicise the dates and times of the walks on the diary page of this website, so please check back from time to time, and book in good time, as numbers may be limited, at least for a table in the pub!

The cost of fun social fitness walks
For a guided nordic walk, it costs £7 per person, plus a £5 hire charge for anyone who wishes to hire some poles for the walk.

This is a contribution towards my travelling costs and the hours I have spent in preparation, as I will have travelled to and tested the route several times before we meet.

There are lots of other opportunities to nordic walk with a group, for example, the Exmoor Society has several walks a year led by very knowledgeable guides, and local ramblers groups often have walks every Wednesday and Saturday - please refer to the Diary page for some ideas.   Other people may choose to go for a gentle nordic stroll with their family and friends after a Sunday pub lunch.

Sponsored walks for charity

Last year the Fun and Fitness Nordic Walkers team walked the Sports Relief Mile at Monksilver in West Somerset in July.

Whom might you meet out nordic walking?
^ top
Anyone of any age - but here are some examples from among the Fun and Fitness Nordic Walkers: nurses, a medical receptionist, retired company directors, a gardener, Bed and Breakfast hosts, an occupational therapist, a GP and his wife, a district nurse, several builders, a lawyer, an administrator in the Benefits Office, a lorry driver, several farmers' wives, a policeman, an upholsterer, a chef, carers, a civil servant from the Foreign Office, a journalist, lots of mothers, thin people, large people, old people and young people, ordinary people and extraordinary people, it just depends on who is free on any particular day.

To enquire about a social Fun and Fitness nordic walk please complete the enquiry form below in good time to avoid disappointment as numbers are limited. I will then contact you to give you further details. Please get in touch by at least the preceding Sunday.

Don't risk just turning up on the day as it is just possible that we may have changed the meeting point/date/time, and pace and length of the walk, to tailor the walk to meet any special requirements of those who have already booked. Social nordic walks are not suitable for pure beginners, you will need to have mastered the basic technique so that you are safe and can keep up. ^ top
