Everything Exmoor is a free encyclopedia, built by the community and business of Exmoor offering information on every aspect of life in the Exmoor National Park. It gathers knowledge of Exmoor in one place and signposts readers to web sites containing more detailed information.

The North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival (which includes some guided nordic walks) will run again this year from Thursday 1 May to Friday 9 May 2008 inclusive.

It is a wonderful opportunity to explore the best routes over Exmoor and North Devon with an experienced guide.

This year there are 66 walks/offerings (and I am leading 2 walks). Each walk must be booked and paid for in advance and tickets are selling well. Some walks are already sold out. I have put brief summaries of some of the walks on my diary page of this website, but please go to the main festival site for full details and to book.

In support of North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival, the Yarn Market Hotel is hosting an evening dinner at the hotel in Dunster, on Wednesday 7th May. On that evening, I will be giving an after-dinner talk about the nordic walking technique. Both residents and non residents are invited to the dinner and talk. The cost of the three course meal and coffee is £25 and must be booked 24 hours in advance (01643 821425). (Please also refer to the Yarn Market Hotel's special offer further down on this page) The proprietor, Antony Brunt, is leading a walk for the Festival on 2nd May, around the beauty spots near Dunster. Antony will show you panoramic views over Dunster Castle and Park as well as over the Bristol Channel and into Wales. The walk passes through oak and mixed woodland and across old settlements and bridges, as well as old Dunster village itself.

Last year, the organisers of the North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival say "nearly 750 tickets were bought by walkers and riders for the 62 guided outings. This represents an 11.5% increase on the previous year's festival. The weather started off brilliantly with perfect conditions for walking and riding. By Tuesday the rain set in but the participants braved the elements for the last four days of the festival. The response the guides and organisers received was most complimentary. Everyone enjoyed the locations, scenery and quality of the guiding. One couple commented “We have learnt a lot and enjoyed ourselves at the same time despite the weather.” Another couple wrote “We have just returned after 3 wonderful days walking - will be back next year for hopefully more than 3!”"

Ramblers Association
The ramblers association website. Look for a date or map search and you will find the walks in your area. You can go on 2-3 walks for free, but after that you are expected to join the RA.

A nordic weekend break: Many people come to make a weekend on Exmoor and learn the nordic walking technique while they are here. Here are some suggestions for local accommodation. You might also like to consider these if you are coming down for the North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival in May.

3* Hotel accommodation in historic Dunster:

Special Offer: The Yarn Market Hotel at Dunster is offering a 10% discount for a stay with them, when booked in conjunction with an introduction to the nordic walking technique with me(subject of course to room availability.) The Yarn Market Hotel is ideally located for walking, cycling, horse riding and many other country pursuits with many walks available from the doorstep, so you can park up and forget your car if you wish. The Yarn Market Hotel staff love to have children there and have several family rooms of varying sizes according to your needs. They also welcome pets. Please call 01643 821425 or click on the link at the beginning of this paragraph.

(This particular offer for a discounted stay at the Yarn Market Hotel, does not apply to the nordic walking taster-introduction which is part of the May 2008 North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival programme, because that activity has already been heavily discounted in support of the Festival.)

Jane Alexander
Jane came to learn the nordic walking technique. I didn't know at the time that she is a journalist. She has since written her independent account of an introduction to nordic walking with me, in the Spring 2007 issue of the Exmoor Magasine which you can buy from all local newsagents.

Jane is a journalist and writer, specialising in natural health and holistic living. The Daily Mail called her "Britain’s top writer on alternative therapies" and she is well-trusted as an expert in natural medicine, holistic living and contemporary spirituality. She lives on Exmoor.
